Echostar’s new DVR UI kills the number pad, long live the touch pad

Dish Network 922 UI
At the Echostar press event today the new 922 UI and remote was unveiled and what do you know the number pad was replaced with a touch pad. So now instead of direct dialing a number you select the numbers on the screen (pictured after the jump) with a touch pad which is similar to a touch pad on most laptops. We’re not sure how we feel about this, it has promise, but we admit it’ll be hard to give up the numbers.

Acoustic Research ARIR200 / ARIR600i WiFi radios bring weather alerts, iPod support

Nothing too groundbreaking here, but Acoustic Research has a new pair of WiFi radios on tap at CES. The first one is the ARIR200 Infinite Radio, which pulls double duty as an internet / AM / FM radio and a traditional alarm clock. It provides direct access to Slacker content and comes bundled with a prepaid subscription to WeatherBug. Moving onto greener pastures, we’ve got the ARIR600i, which adds in a “subwooer” and includes an iPod dock for charging your PMP and playing back tunes while docked. They’ll be available in February / mid-May, respectively for $129.99 / $199.99.

Acoustic Research Internet Radios Bring Music, Talk and More without a PC Tether

Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity, Simple Set-up and Personalization of
Web Content and Major Content Partners Differentiate the New Line

LAS VEGAS – January 7, 2009, International CES, Booth 11006-10506 - Audiovox
Corporation (NASDAQ: VOXX). As Internet radio gains popularity in the U.S., Acoustic
Research is debuting two new products that should help increase online listeners by
disconnecting traditional Internet cables and adding desirable music and weather features. The
two models offer built-in wireless connectivity, AM/FM radio, USB and Ethernet connections
and 512MB memory for up to 10 hours of recording off the Internet as well as the AM/FM
bands. Additionally, the AR Infinite Radio is simple to use and customize on the Personal
Portal, listen to Slacker™ Personal Radio stations and get immediate weather alerts from
WeatherBug®.

“With virtually millions of Americans tuning into Internet radio each week, we wanted to cut the
PC tether and bring the vast Internet radio station experience into other rooms of the home in a
way unmatched by any competitive product,” said Tom Malone, president, Audiovox Electronics
Corporation. “We added connectivity and customization partners that will bring consumers an
enhanced level of enjoyment available exclusively in the AR Infinite Radios.”

Bringing Acoustic Research Infinite Radio To a New Level

The AR Infinite Radio experience starts with the Personal Portal, which
allows the consumer to access premium content features that come with
AR Infinite Radio through innovative content partnerships. The portal
lets a consumer add custom stations and URLs - select from more than
12,000 stations and store favorite presets and genres.”

The Acoustic Research Slacker partnership allows direct connect to
Slacker Personal Radio Music Service with millions of tracks, 100
genre stations and more than 10,000 artist stations, all in high-quality
sound equal to HD and satellite radio. Users can create their own music
libraries using Slacker content.

Weather is one of the most frequently searched content sections
for any Web site, making the WeatherBug partnership
important to consumers. This free benefit includes one and three-day forecasts, continuous
emergency weather alerts and instant text-to-speech conversion from four synthesized voices.

iHome debuts iP1 iPod / iPhone speaker system

iHome certainly isn’t starved for iPod docks or speaker systems these days, but it looks like the company just couldn’t pass up the opportunity of expanding its line-up at CES, and this new so-called iP1 system looks to be leading the way. At first glance, this one sure seems to hit most of the right marks, with it packing 100W of power, two four-inch woofers, two one-inch tweeters, and Bongiovi Acoustic’s proprietary Digital Power Station processor, which iHome says helps make this the most advanced speaker system they’ve ever developed. You’ll also get a standard AUX input to accommodate your other devices, plus an A/V output and, of course, a remote control. Unfortunately, there’s no word of a price or release date just yet, but we’re guessing iHome won’t be holding onto those details for too much longer.

Samsung’s skinny Blu-ray player uncovered

Stop staring at the plastic wrapped photos from our pre-CES tour and have a look at Samsung’s totally uncovered 1.5-inch thick Blu-ray player. The BDP4600 is sure to kick off an all new battle of “thin for thin’s sake” amongst CE manufacturers, but honestly, given the emphasis on design or complete lack thereof on most Blu-ray hardware so far, this can’t come a moment too soon. What does it do? Your guess is as good as ours, until Samsung decides to let loose with the specifications.

Sonoro Eklipse iPod / CD sound system hits the FCC

Sonoro’s Eklipse iPod / CD sound system has been available in Europe for a few months now, but it hasn’t exactly made much of a ripple ’round these parts. That looks like it could well be changing, however, as the device has just recently landed in the hands of the folks at the FCC, who unsurprisingly seem to be particularly interested in the system’s remote control. As for the rest of the system, you can expect to get an always welcome OLED display, along with 7.5W of power output, a headset jack, a standard 3.5mm input to accomodate your non-iPod devices, and support for MP3 and WMA-loaded CDs in addition to plain old audio CDs. Of course, an FCC appearance doesn’t always assure a US release, but if there is one, you can probably expect to pay about the same €499 (or $690) that it currently demands in Europe.

PS Audio debuting world’s first HRx disc player at CES

Oh, brother — yet another high resolution audio format to worry over. Just when you thought you could pick up Denon’s forthcoming universal Blu-ray player and be done with it comes HRx. The format, which is hyped up by Reference Recordings and is literally high-res WAV files toasted onto DVD media, cannot be played back in traditional DVD / DVD-Audio decks. Instead, you’ll need PS Audio’s PerfectWave Transport Memory Player. Until now, folks (all three of them) have simply been ripping the files onto PCs or music servers for playback, but the item you see above will indeed handle CDs and HRx DVDs, the latter of which delivers 24-bit, 176kHz sound. There’s no mention of a price or eventual release date, but something this specialized just can’t be cheap. We mean, it just can’t be.

iLuv rolls out iHD171 HD radio with iPhone / iPod dock, iTunes tagging

iLuv has been on quite the roll of late with these radio clocks and whatnot, though we’re a touch more excited than usual about the iHD171. ASUS officially launches iPod-friendly AIR3 internet radio

Not that this debut is anything shocking (thanks, FCC!), but we’re still stoked to see ASUS get all official with its AIR3 sound system. Sure, it’s not exactly treading on new ground, but for those looking for a touch more functionality in their iPod sound system, the internet radio inclusion is one that’s much appreciated. ASUS talks pretty big about the device’s audio prowess, noting that it utilizes a Texas Instruments Class-D amplifier and HDSS (High Definition Sound Standard) certified drivers. Also of note, the unit includes S-Video / composite video outs and supports UPnP sharing via 802.11b/g WiFi or Ethernet; if that’s not enough to catch your eye, there’s also a useful auxiliary input and built-in weather forecast display that pulls down updates from the world wide web. As ASUS always does, we’re left hangin’ sans a price or release date, but we suppose it’s teaching us a lesson in patience… or something.

DISH Network’s DTVPal DVR now shipping, caught in the wild

We actually pondered aloud where all the standalone OTA DVRs were in this wild world earlier this year, and at long (long!) last, we finally have a new entrant into the all-but-dead niche. DISH Network’s DTVPal DVR, which was known in a former life as the EchoStar TR-50, has finally started to ship out to anxious buyers. For those who’ve forgotten, this box acts as a digital-to-analog converter and an HD DVR, capturing up to 30 hours of HD OTA material or 150 hours of SD content. Check the read link for a slew of in the wild / interface shots.

[Thanks, TOTA]
